Divorce: The breakup of a marriage is often one of the most stressful times in a person's life. We have substantial experience helping clients through the painful experience of divorce. We work hard to make certain that they receive their fair share of marital assets when divorce is the chosen path. To the greatest extent possible, we work to protect the health, safety and welfare of any children.

We have been practicing law in Illinois for over 30 years, with 15 years spent focusing mainly on divorce and family law matters. We handle all areas relating to family law, divorce and marital dissolution, including child support, child custody, alimony, and property division settlements. Also, as a trained mediator Mr. Ament can provide mediation services. Collaborative Law is a new concept, where both parties are represented by both attorneys. The attorneys are prohibited from representing a client if the matter can not be resolved and results in litigation. Mr. Ament is trained and certified as a collaborative lawyer, and can provide collaborative solutions for divorce.

Family Law: We have been practicing family law in the Chicago area for over 20 years. While divorce certainly is the most common family law matter that can arise, there are also many other legal issues that can arise that affect family relationships, including post-decree modifications of the divorce judgment, enforcement of the terms orders and judgments, child support modifications, etc. Some involve modifications of things that were decided during the divorce. Others are completely unrelated to divorce proceedings but involve similar issues.

We also represent parents in paternity actions in which the court determines the legal parentage of a child born to unmarried parents. We draft and review prenuptial agreements for clients before marriage to help protect their individual property, including family-owned businesses.

Real Estate: Real estate is a complex area of the law that requires knowledge, skill and experience. At Abrams & Ament, P.C., we have been practicing real estate law for over 30 years.
